If you’re looking for a low-budget, cultural immersion experience spending time in the foothills of the Annapurnas, volunteering experience at our guesthouse might be a good idea.
You’ll be expected to help my mom in the garden, doing housekeeping chores as well as other tasks that might come up when running a guesthouse in the mountains, for example helping guests with their luggage from the parking lot. As you spend more time with us and we get a sense of what you are more comfortable with, your role will become more specific.
One of the biggest perks of this position is the opportunity to enjoy nature around Sarangkot, the majestic views of the Himalayas that it offers and to learn about the way of life in this region. While most people might enjoy this, it’s also important to realize that living in the mountains comes with challenges. It is only after you’ve realized and accepted both the pros and cons that will you become a good fit for this position. For example, in the monsoon (June/July or July/August or August/September, really the seasons keep shifting so you can’t really pin-point exactly what months the monsoon falls in), you might get fed up with incessant rain but that’s also when you get to to see nature at its fullest potential and vigor.
You’ll be expected to work about 32 hours/week for 5 days a week. The working hours aren’t rigid and there’s no clock-in system. During your off days, we encourage you to explore the area. Check out here for ideas. If you want to go for a longer trek, we can work it out too!
We’ll provide you with a room with an attached bathroom and Wi-Fi. Since we use solar for hot water, it might not be available 24 hours but we can manage hot water for showers. You can use our Washing machine for laundry. Clothes are generally sun-dried.
You can also have dinner with us at no cost except on days when we aren’t at home. For breakfast or lunch, please visit local restaurants or try our on site restaurant.
Although it doesn’t snow here, it can get cold up to around 5 degrees celsius (41 Fahrenheit) in winter mornings, so you’ll have to pack up warm clothes if you’re visiting in winter months (Dec/Jan/Feb). It will be comfortable during the daytime. Since we’re located in the hills, the breeze keeps the temperature relatively moderate in the summer (doesn’t typically get hotter than 25 celsius / 77 Fahrenheit).
The minimum duration of this volunteering opportunity is 8 weeks. If you’re interested, please send an email to superviewlodge@gmail.com.
